SERVICES

The Safety Management Council meets every other month and is open to all members. No additional fees are charged to participate in this active group. Featured guest speakers inform members of safety related issues directly affecting the trucking industry. Many safety professionals attend these meetings not only to learn about hot topics, but also to network with their peers on issues such as; accident reconstruction, driver retention and hiring, and equipment enhancement products designed to reduce crashes.

Delaware Truck Safe Driving Championships – This annual event is “the best of the best”…a challenging written test, pre-trip inspection, interview, and driving course that allows qualified safe drivers to showcase their talent. Open only to DMTA member companies with drivers meeting high safety standards, this is the only event of its kind in Delaware. The winner in each class is afforded the opportunity to compete in the National Championship. There is even a Delaware State Grand Champion title for the driver with the best overall score. This all day event is held in May, and there is something for the entire family, along with many opportunities for non-driving professionals to help in areas such as judging and score tallying.

Driver of the Month/Driver of the Year – Each year, nominees are solicited for Driver of the Month/Driver of the Year. This award is based on a driver’s safety record, accommodations, and public opinion. All nominees are anonymously scrutinized by committee for issues such as length of time driving; number of annual miles; date of last traffic violation; date of last crash (if any); etc. The list is pared down to 12 (1 for each month), then the overall highest score is named Driver of the Year. The awards banquet is held (usually in November), and many local and national dignitaries have been known to speak, honoring Delaware’s top drivers.

Truck Driving School Scholarship – Each year, at the Driver of the Year Banquet, DMTA awards a scholarship (usually $500.00) to a deserving member of the community. This scholarship is used to pay a portion of the tuition at Delaware’s premier truck driver training school, Delaware Technical and Community College in Georgetown. Past winners have gone on to drive for many of the DMTA’s member companies with great success.

Educational Seminars – The DMTA, along with other sponsors, is very involved in the educational process. Whether you are new to the industry and need complete A-Z training, or are an industry veteran in need of a refresher. The DMTA is here for you. Past topics include: Dot record keeping, Motor Fuel Tax Compliance, Brake Repair and Maintenance,
Accident Reconstruction, and Collision Avoidance Skills. Local and national speakers are carefully chosen to assure that you receive accurate and helpful information. These seminars are presented in half-day, full-day, and evening sessions throughout the year.

Golf Outing – The golf outing is rotated every year among Delaware’s top rated championship courses for a day of fun and excitement. Play well (or not so well) and walk away with some terrific prizes (including a high value prize for a hole in one!) This outing is usually held in June before the strong humidity sets in. Whether a seasoned golf-a-holic, or a novice, this outing promises to be a super day of relaxation and networking fun.

Highway Watch® Program - Highway Watch® is the roadway sector's national safety and security program that uses the skills, experiences, and "road smarts" of America's transportation workers to help protect the nation's critical infrastructure and the transportation of goods, services, and people.

Highway Watch® participants - transportation infrastructure workers, commercial and public truck and bus drivers, and other highway sector professionals - are specially trained to recognize potential safety and security threats.

Highway Watch is administered by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) under a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Delaware’s Road Team – In 2004 DMTA established a professional Road Team in conjunction with the Delaware State Police. The Road Team has been established for the purpose of education and promotion of highway safety. Delaware’s Road Team Captains will appear at events ranging from safety meeting to public functions to reinforce the importance of safety and professionalism in our industry. They will also meet with the news media, students, transportation officials and government leaders to demonstrate the trucking industry’s commitment to safety.

Monthly Meetings - DMTA holds monthly dinner meetings at various locations throughout the state. These meeting are a fantastic way to network with other trucking industry professionals and the guest speakers are very informative and dynamic as well.
